N-butyl alcohol

CAS No. : 71-36-3

English: n-butanol; N - butyl alcohol. butanol

Physical and chemical properties:

Colorless liquid, taste of wine, relative density (d2020)0.8109, boiling point 117.7℃, melting point --90.2℃, refractive index (n20D)1.3993, flash point 35-35.5℃, spontaneous combustion point 365℃, solubility in water 7.7%(weight) at 20℃, water in n-butanol solubility 20.1%(weight). With ethanol, ether and other organic solvents miscible, vapor and air to form an explosive mixture, explosion limit 1.45-11.25(volume).

USES:

Mainly used in the manufacture of phthalic acid, aliphatic dibasic acid and phosphoric acid of n-butyl plasticizer, they are widely used in a variety of plastics and rubber products, but also in the organic synthesis of butyraldehyde, butyric acid, butylamine and butyl lactate raw materials. It is also the extraction agent of oils, drugs (such as antibiotics, hormones and vitamins) and spices, additive of alkyd resin coating, solvent of organic dyes and printing inks, dewaxing agent.

Solubility: soluble in water, alcohol and ether.

Main application: used for organic synthesis, making essence, etc.

Health hazards: inhaled or taken orally. Has the stimulation effect to the eye, the skin, the mucous membrane and the respiratory tract. Symptoms of poisoning may include headache, nausea, and dizziness.

Fire and explosion hazard: this product is flammable and irritating.

Dangerous properties: flammable, its steam and air can form an explosive mixture, in case of open fire, high heat energy combustion explosion. It reacts strongly with oxidants. Its vapors are heavier than air and can spread far and wide at a lower level, where a source of fire can ignite back.

The impurities contained in the refining method are water and various alcohols. CaO, K2CO3, CaSO4, or MgSO4 are used for drying and distillation after filtration. The distillate is further refined by crystallization. If there is more water, it can be used to dehydrate ternary azeotropic mixture of benzene by common distillation.
